There is a huge myth that graduates are only successful if they secure a role on a graduate job scheme as they believe that this is the only route open to them. This is reinforced by a recent survey which indicates that only one-third of 16 to 25 year-olds leaving full-time education had aspirations to work for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). So what are SMEs? The term refers to businesses which have fewer than 250 staff and a turnover of no more than £50 million.

Recent research from Santander Business Banking, suggests that SMEs have generated more than two and a half times as many jobs from 2013 to 2017, compared to larger firms. What is resilience and how can you be more resilient

P&G came on campus recently to talk about resilience as part of our #SkillsforSuccess series of workshops. Careers Consultant Steve Norman passes on their key messages.  

You may be noticing more and more employers talking about resilience and how it’s important in today’s ever-changing workplace.

So what is resilience?  It is the ability to cope with setbacks and bounce back from them.  For P&G that’s important in a work context but it can be applied to any situation.

Here are P&G’s six top tips for being resilient.                

Find your purpose. What is that you want to do? You are more likely to bounce back from setbacks if you are doing something you really want to do.

Choose your attitude towards any challenges – you can decide how to respond or how you feel about it positively or negatively.

Optical systems internship at Illumina

The optical systems group at Illumina performs research and development on advanced optical technologies to push the limits of DNA sequencing. The resulting machines find application in medical diagnostics and cutting edge genetic research.

In a 12-week internship, the intern will contribute to this research pipeline via the testing and screening of novel optical technologies, through research, designing, and building optical breadboard systems. These technologies integrate with sophisticated biochemical systems, requiring complex problem solving at the interface of physics, engineering, and biochemistry.

Applications are being accepted up to 16th December 2018, with assessment days scheduled last 2 weeks of January 2019.

Technical exercises – Mikey Bishop, Early Careers Co-ordinator, Arup

When you apply to a role at Arup, we want to ensure that you can demonstrate and communicate your knowledge and skills. To allow you to do this, we incorporate a technical exercise into our assessment centres.

A technical exercise will be related to the specific role or industry you have applied for e.g. Structural Engineering. It will also incorporate aspects of the tasks that you would be doing on the job. It is important that where possible you demonstrate your working and remember the thought process you took to get to your answer. This is because your technical exercise will often be analysed and discussed during your interview with hiring managers.

An academic career: tips for success
