SaCHA – wicked challenges, great experience

Students as Change Agents is returning again next month offering another chance for UoE students all over the world to tackle some wicked challenges. SaCHA Summer ‘21 will run from Tuesday 1 June through to Thursday 1 July and include a blend of live coaching, asynchronous group exercises and recorded training content.

“This programme is an opportunity to work on real-life problems and development skills that can be applied in the work place. It allows you to develop leadership skills, critical thinking, problem solving skills, teamwork skills, and communication skills. It is a tailored personal development and growth programme.”

Students as Change Agents – (April 2021) Alumnus

We are working with four excellent external partners, each running a wicked challenge that students can choose to tackle. Our challenge partners and questions for SACHA Summer 21 are:

1. How can Scotland prevent lives being harmed by alcohol?

Alcohol Focus Scotland is the national charity working to prevent and reduce alcohol-related harm on individuals, communities and Scotland as a whole.

2. How might we equip young people from all backgrounds with the skills they need to tackle the climate crisis?

Apps for Good is an independent charity, since 2010 they’ve worked with teachers to unlock the potential of over 200,000 students around the UK, and beyond, with their free technology courses.

3. How could Journeys within our Community go further in supporting Cambodian youth in contributing to the sustainable development of their society?

Journeys within our Community (JWOC) partner with low-income Cambodian youth to fulfil their potential in education, employment and engagement with their community.

4. How can Scotland move beyond awareness raising and have the fair trade concept instilled in public consciousness and buying practices?

The Scottish Fair Trade Forum contributes to building a just, equitable and sustainable world through supporting Scotland to remain a vibrant Fair Trade Nation and working to embed the principles of Fair Trade in all aspects of Scottish society.

How does virtual graduate recruitment work?

The restrictions of the pandemic have mean that the shift to virtual gradual recruitment with some employers (not all, though) has accelerated and is likely to remain as employers and applicants appreciate that there are many benefits in terms of flexibility, reducing time pressures, removing the need for travel, sustainability, preference of communication.

However, the Careers Service, along with colleagues at other UK careers services, continues to raise issues with employers & representative bodies like the Institute of Employers (ISE) that this shift is not always positive for some applicants e.g for those with limited digital access, poor broadband, lack of quiet place for online applications and interviews.

Where is it is increasing with some larger graduate recruiters, I wanted to share some insight into how it works to help you feel a bit more confident about the process.

We asked a selection of employers to share their advice on how best to prepare and we have some tips and resources to share too.
